Providence School Artist Residency Program Receives Support from the Martin V. and
Martha K. Smith Foundation, and the California Arts CouncilArtists in Schools Program.
The Ventura County Arts Council Artist Residency programs at Providence School were recently featured in the Ventura County Star. Thanks to generous funding from the Martin V. and Martha K. Smith Foundation, the Ventura Office of Education, and the California Arts Council, the VCAC has instituted an ongoing artist residency program that brings professional artists in all disciplines into the year round school at the juvenile facility located on Vineyard in Oxnard.

Well known Ventura muralist MB Hanrahan has been working with the students since late March to create three murals. These murals are based on the school's credo "Change Takes Effort." The artwork is now complete and soon the murals will be permanently installed at the Juvenile Justice Facility. The location of the murals will be in common areas so that they can be enjoyed by staff, residents and visitors alike. An informal dedication of the murals is being planned. Other current residencies include a African Drum Ensemble, violin and guitar lessons, basic drawing, watercolor and pastel classes, and poetry writing classes.

CSSSA/InnerSpark offers instruction in the fields of animation, music, dance, film and video, theatre, creative writing
and the visual arts. The California Legislature created the California State Summer School for the Arts to provide a training environment for the state's exceptional young artists. The school has conducted summer sessions in each consecutive year beginning in 1987. Thousands of young Californians have attended since the program's inception. For many of them, it was the first step to important and successful careers in the arts and related industries.

Statewide, only 500 of approximately 1,600 applicants were selected to attend this summer's session. While student athletes who achieve the same level of excellence as these arts scholars are routinely honored, the California Arts Scholars Recognition Ceremony is often the first time these young artists experience that same praise -- praise they have definitely earned.
